Fear is something that is present in the mind of most human beings. Some people are able to deal with it better than most. However, is fear something man has created? Fear often holds a person’s emotions hostage and hence causes a person to feel like the only way out is to embrace their fears, allowing them to dominate their mindset and thoughts. As a result, fear becomes normal in a person’s life which causes them to make little effort to remove it . Fear is not good and in Timothy4:4, it states that everything created by God is good, again suggesting God did not intend for us to fear.
2 Timothy 1:7 - “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power, love and self control.” This suggests our feelings are not imposed upon us. Our thoughts belong to us and fear exists first as a thought, therefore we can simply choose not to think about fear. We personally have authority over our thoughts, implying we can choose how we feel rather than having a feeling imposed upon us.
‘God did not give us a spirit of fear’. Therefore it’s almost as if fear does not exist when a person first enters the world, suggesting that fear develops as a result of choices of what to think made by man. This clearly indicates that fear is not from God. What is the point in being afraid? If God did not give us fear why should we bother giving it the time of day and hence dwelling on it and as a result allowing it to take over our life? Fear is not from God therefore it is possible to live a life WITHOUT fear. Live a life for God and fear will be weakened.
If fear does not exist , we have no excuse not to tell people about Jesus. It is probably for this reason that God did not give us a spirit of fear. We need to be proud of the gospel, not ashamed. We need to be ready to suffer for telling people the good news. However, we should not fear suffering and rejection as this will prevent you from telling other the good news. We should just accept that we need to tell people about Jesus Christ and we will suffer as a result, but this should not stop you. 2Timothy1:12 – do not be ashamed to suffer for the sake of the gospel. If we don’t tell someone when we have the opportunity, will they ever get another chance to hear the good news of the gospel and hence have a chance of becoming saved? If we do not tell people about Jesus then what was the point in Jesus enduring the cross for you? Jesus was sent to save everyone, therefore who are we to deem who is eligible to receive the good news? 2Timothy4:5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the good news. This suggests we need to gain more confidence in doing this over time. This is not just going to come naturally though. First we need to eliminate the fear element from within our lives. However Psalm 27:2 is very helpful in this ideas. ’ When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall’. You may be attacked spiritually but if God leads the way and you trust in Him it will be those who do not believe who stumble, not you.
2Timothy2:10 we are encouraged to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus, to those God has chosen. We cannot allow fear to dominate our thoughts, fear is not from God and is hence not what God wants us to dwell upon. 2Timothy2:13 – If we have died with him , we will also live with him. If we endure, we will also reign with him.
Isiah41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
God will never leave you. He wants you to prosper, be successful and tell people about Christ. Fear is man-made and has no place in our minds or our heats. 1Timothy1:6. Our main aim is to show people love. The more we trust in God, the weaker and smaller the fear in our lives will become. You can do everything through Christ , don’t let fear stop you from living the life God desires for you to live.
